Week 11: The Five Ways To Choose/ Change Careers

Hey guys!

We are coming closer to the end of WCIYP and I have gained so much knowledge along the way. This week we read Chapter 10: The Five Ways To Choose/ Change Careers. The first way that they talk about to choose or change careers is by the internet. O*Net Online which was discussed in one of the previous chapters is a digital online treasure house of information and ha up to date information about careers. However, it seems that you could have all the knowledge you need on this one source it is very limited. O*Net only covers about 900 or so careers but with the careers it shows they are very detailed and can go up to 10-12 pages of information. The next way to choose or change a career are tests. You can always find assessments to help you choose a career and sometimes taking a test will help you choose something and open up your mind. However, there are some bad things about these types of tests. It can not measure you as an individual it can just measure the group you fall in. You also need to take several tests because taking more than one will help you go down the right path.

The third way is using the flower exercise. This isn't the most popular way just because it does require a lot of emphasis on focusing on who you are as a person. In one of my previous posts I shared a photo of the exact flower diagram they used. After you create the diagram you then put together your favorite transferable skills and your three favorite fields of knowledge on one piece of paper. Then you start to connect who you are to the types of jobs you want. There is more to it then that and as the process goes on you start to find out more about yourself. The fourth way is changing a career in two-steps. Say you are in the same field but want a completely other job then you can shift and have experience in the field but be in new territories. Its simple and you can always say you have experience. The last way to choose or change your career path is finding out what the job-market will need. However you always want to be happy in the work you do and its amazing if you were to find your dream job you must be realistic, You must know whats "in" or whats "out" in the world of business. You need to know what is in demand. What are companies looking for? What is the biggest demand in the job market? I know that was a lot of information but imagine being the one who has to change careers it could be nerve wrecking. However, there are these 5 steps that can help you later on in life.

Week 10: Apple is the Universe

Hey guys!

So I was researching ads online and came across this article on November 9th, Apple Kicks Off iPad Pro Marketing With Ads Focused On Split-Screen And Pencil. Apple is at it once again but they are bringing to you the iPad Pro and have already started marketing it. Apple is one of the biggest name out there and when people think of Apple usually bigger and better comes to mind. Apple is always outdoing themselves and always knows how to catch a persons eyes. Their marking tactics are the best and they always seem to be on top every time. Their main focus this time was to show the new iPad's key features being the ability to run two full iPad apps side by side and the new pencil stylus. The new video out there is a video with the universe and showing how big it is and later showing users the new stylus and how this will be the biggest iPad yet. They showed this very clear with their reference to the new iPad being as big as the universe. Clever once again Apple, but very creative and full of color.

You see how this can engage a person. I am a person who loves to have the newest and best thing on the market. Apple's ability to market their newest features in a creative way is so powerful. There is always something new when it comes to Apple. If its the size of the device or some new features it has to offer. However the ability to have 2 apps on the same page is quite amazing. The newest device will probably drive users to wait in lines until the new iPad comes out. Marketing is everything. If you have a reputable name out there you can do so much. Apple is one of the number one companies out there and their creative style has definitely gotten our attentions.

Week 10: How to Deal With Any Handicaps You Have

Hey Guys!

So in this week we are reading Chapter 10 How to Deal With Any Handicaps You Have. This chapter discusses the feelings that are left after you feel you don't have what an employer is looking for. If I went to an interview and I had an awful experience I would automatically think that it was my fault and I wasn't what they were looking for. You beat your self up with what one employer might think. However, there is someone out there that is looking for you. One employer who doesn't want you doesn't define you. You just need to improve or look somewhere else.

There might be a number of reasons you do not get hired. Age might be an issue and however an employer should never discriminate you because of your age but it does happen. There might be some prejudice in the work place however that doesn't kill your chances. You might be out of work too long or your just too young might come across their heads. However, they will hire you if you choose to approach a small company and they don't have to put you late into a pension plan, and they will hire you if you have a positive attitude towards your aging. You have experience and being older doesn't make you out of the game.

This chapter also goes into many more types of "handicaps" we all face. However being a young individual I find it strange how times have changed. Usually the one who has the most experience is the one who gets the job. If someone had 15 years of experience and someone with a degree comes around it gets offered to someone who went to school. Does no schooling but tons of years of experience make that their weakness? No, there will be one person looking for your experience even if you don't have the schooling. You just need to aim at the smaller companies and have a positive attitude.

Week 9: What's Trending?

Hey guys!

As we wrap week 9 up and move into the next season I wanted to discuss trending. I remember when Facebook and Twitter launched and made such an impact on peoples lives in a good way. Facebook and Twitter are the largest social media tools people use today. You can get everything on there your looking for however there not the only sites to see whats going on. You can always see what's trending on other sites. In an article on Hoot-suite 5 ways to find trending topics other than twitter. It discusses other sites that are out there. One site that's one of my personal favorites is Buzz-feed. Its a good site that discusses what people are talking about and has its own comic take on it.

Also how about the number one search engine out there, Google. I use google for everything even if its for something simple or complex. On google you can always see whats trending by going on that portion of the site. You can go to google trends and put in a name of a celebrity that you heard on the radio or news and even see how many people have searched them before. It allows you to see what people are interested in or what people are talking about. This tool is great for marketers and allows them to see whats trending and what target market is interested in it. Its a good tool to get familiar with. So next time you need a new site to go to  I suggest maybe trying out google trends or even Buzz-feed. Twitter and Facebook aren't the only good sites to go to.

Week 9: You Get To Choose Where You Work

Hey guys!

So were zipping through WCIYP and were off to chapter 8. This chapter goes through 5 steps that job-hunters or career changers have found extremely helpful to take. I felt that this chapter was really important and I gathered a lot. First, You need to find out what careers or jobs your flower points to. From last chapter we learned how to create a flower. As strange as that sounds its actually something that shows who you are. It gathers information like your favorite knowledge's and fields of knowledge's, the types of people you enjoy working with, and etc. It brings everything that you want in a job. It really brings you closer to picking the right job for you.

Second, you need to try on careers before you decide which ones to pursue. If you are someone who has worked in retail and all you know is retail and you feel unhappy maybe change it up. Having a career shift could help you decide what you like and what you don't like. You cant just say no to something when  you don't know what it entitles. Change could surprise you. Third,  You need  to find out what kinds of organizations have such jobs. This involves doing some research and seeing whats out there. Fourth, you need to find names of particular places that interest you. You need to jot everything down about different organizations you may hear about it. This is very useful information. There are too many organizations out there but if you can pin point the ones that you hear the best things about then it will decrease your search in half. Next try to be specific on what you are looking for and don't be too broad about your search.

Lastly, You need to learn as much as you can about the place before formally approaching them. If you went to an interview with no research around your belt it wouldn't be the wisest. You need to be prepared, do your research about a company before investing the time into the company. You need to enjoy the career you get into. You need to be happy in what you do so why not get it right now then later on.

Week 8:You Need to Understand More Fully Who You Are

Hey guys!

As we wrap up week 8 content we went through Chapter 7 You Need To Understand More Fully Who You Are in WCIYP? You need to know who you are and what you want. If an employer were to ask could you tell me a little bit about yourself and it were to draw a blank, how would that look in the eyes of a potential employer? By doing this homework on yourself you are able to describe in detail what you are exactly looking for. Another aspect is exactly ending up with a big picture of what job is going to excite you. I know later on in my life that when I find a job that pays well but I was too late in my career to really figure out what I really wanted and I am miserable it is going to make me want to change even if the money was great. Why not try to figure out who you are earlier in life than later on. Also you wont have to wait for companies to have a vacancy in able to talk to them. When you are younger and you are able to describe yourself in detail exactly who you are and what you want to employers that will give you that competitive edge.

In the book it calls your traits inventory. You need to begin by mentally disassociating your self from your last job title. If you were a salesman or perhaps a designer you have just locked yourself in that field. You want to go through and say I am a person who... "has had these experiences." I am a person who... is skilled at doing this or that." I am a person... " is unusual in this way or that" " I am a person who... "knows a lot about this or that." The author illustrates and reinforces that we are a person not a role. You need to identify constantly what a unique person you are. Throughout the chapter it will show and tell you how to accurately make lists about yourself and to really analyze yourself and you get to know who you are and what you want.

Week: 8 Hootsuite

 Hey Guys!
So this week we ended up utilizing Hoot-suite. Hoot-suite is a social media management system. In 2008 it was created by Ryan Holmes. It's user friendly and what I have seen its pretty easy to use. I set mine up and was able to add my LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. I added streams for LinkedIn like updates and stories. I received the updates as I were on the actual social media site itself. On the scroll bar you have multiple options like getting connected to ads and campaigns and being able to view and post on whatever social media site you want. All you need to do is add it then if you want to view it on the home screen then you need to add the stream and it will pop up and you can select your preference.

Another thing that Hoot suite offers is certification. If you want to be certified through hoot-suite then you can benefit from that as well. There are so many types of informative videos that you can watch and be tested on that you can be certified on.
In this picture I created a twitter account and posted hello. It was simple and posted to my site automatically.

Overall, Hoot-suite is simple and easy to use. I plan to take full advantage on getting certified. Being able to manage my accounts all on one site and posts on all of them if I wanted is more time efficient. :)
